Celebrating 3 Years of 78 Acre Woods Tallow & Botanical Skincare
Share
When we think back to 2022, to a younger and more rested version of Amy and Kim, we were so excited (and so naive) as we entered into the world of entrepreneurship while juggling small kiddos. August 2025 marks three years of crafting tallow skincare and we are forever grateful for how this business has grown — and how we have grown along with it!
Our "Why"
To share in the sentiment of basically every small business owner: it hasn’t been all roses! Our biggest challenge (as sisters, mothers, and biz owners) is the fact that we live 1.5 hours apart.
There were so many days we thought for sure we were done. When we first started, we couldn’t convince people to put “beef fat” on their skin. And we thought about quitting. Then, seemingly overnight, TikTok blew up tallow skincare online, (which was both a blessing and a curse) and suddenly we felt lost in the crowd, and we really thought about quitting. But through it all what has kept us going is all the amazing women and families we have connected with, who have found relief with our balms and salves, who believe in us, who share with their friends, who hype us online…all these seemingly small acts of love have kept a fire burning within us.
Tallow as Tradition, Not Trend
We really believe in tallow as tradition, not a passing trend. We know these sacred saturated fats, like tallow and lard, have been used in homes through the centuries. What started with a desire to use more of the whole animal when harvesting steers of our own, quickly snowballed into botanical infused tallow skincare. At the time, very few were creating in this way, but to think we are front runners would be unfair to those who would have been creating simple skincare like this in their homes generations ago. Combining the fats they had on hand, animal fats like tallow, with the herbs and plants available to them (yarrow, plantain, wild rose) was just a way of life. We are harkening back to this simplified version — with a modern upgrade.
Highlights Through the Years
Our original labels and branding, on our gold tins.
We started with just three tallow balms or "creams" as we referred to them then. Now we have grown to include face care, salves and whips, as well as a hair oil!
A rare sighting - Kim and Amy at a market together! This was at Wild Roses Festival in 2023. A memorable experience among incredible women.
Our updated branding thanks to the talented Becca at Sojourn and Soul. She's helped us create everything from our logos, labels, website and more. Working with her was the glow up we needed!
Staying True to Us
Many things have changed over the years but some things will remain steadfast for us, especially our love of local. We have always believed in the power of community and the desire and need to support small businesses; this was amplified through the creation of our own business, and we continue to share the absolute importance of supporting local farmers, makers, families and businesses.
We will continue to stay true to what has always been at the core of 78 Acre Woods: simple, gentle skincare sourced with local ingredients. This summer has been such an inspiring season of foraging, crafting and dreaming up future creations. Like our skincare, our process is always slow (maybe even slower than we wish some days), but that is the season of life we are in as mamas to littles, all under the age of 6.
What’s Ahead?
We have many creations in the works right now that will be released this fall and later this year! A new floral & tallow body whip that will surely become a beloved part of our core collection, a botanical face serum, and revamped whip for fall. We have new stores coming, a few winter markets, and always something fun happening on socials.
Sharing Our Gratitude
Our online connections have led to some really beautiful, really meaningful conversations, and friendships. Hearing from mothers about how our tallow skincare helped their children and families has been such a gift; Having other women who truly believe in us and share our creations with their loved ones is an honour; Families making us a part of their homes and routines is just priceless. The gratitude we feel for this whole journey is huge. It’s been a messy, rocky, inspiring process with late nights, tears (of frustration and joy), and full hearts from the most genuine community of women and mothers. Thank you for being a part of something we love so much, and as always, thank you for being here!
